In drawings, sculptures, photos, videos, and performances, I use rocks as a literal and metaphorical starting point to give uncertainty, absurdity, and attentiveness physical form.
I put rocks in precarious situations, echoing the precarity of a thriving, observant life in an exploitative political and economic system courting ecological disaster. The volatility I create in my work evokes Sisyphean absurdities that are both humorous and ominous. With graphite and paper mâché, I make rocks impossibly float and balance. I carry boulders across snow fields and through grocery stores.
My art references various manifestations and interpretations of rocks and their related phenomena, including the moon, gravity, lightness and weight, and most recently the tragicomic cartoon character Wile E. Coyote – all in their own way suggesting aspects of perseverance, adoration, inquisitiveness, wit, and the fallacy of authoritarian certainty.
Bio
Schaefer was born, raised, and currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado. She earned a B.A. in English Literature and Visual Arts from Regis University. She is a co-founding member of artist-owned and operated TANK Studios, LLC., a sustainable, community-centered studio space for professional artists in Denver. Her artwork has been exhibited at numerous locations including the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Colorado Boulder Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Rule Gallery in Marfa, TX, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Schaefer was an artist-in-residence at Jentel Foundation Residency (Banner, WY), RedLine Contemporary Art Center (Denver, CO), and Breckenridge Creative Arts (Breckenridge, CO). Her curatorial work includes solo exhibitions by artist Catherine Haggarty and Esteban Cabeza de Baca. Since 2013, Schaefer has directed the Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer Program at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, where she also teaches.
